At Johnny Depp Trial, jurors listen to tense audio recordings.

The case is not about whether Johnny Depp Trial, who has denied the allegations, is an alleged abuser. Rather, it is about whether the actress, who has also denied the allegations, was indeed assaulted by Depp. The case is one of allegations and denials, and the sometimes-tense evidence

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) —
Jurors in Johnny Depp’s libel suit against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, heard audio recordings on Monday in which he mentioned the violence that could ensue if their arguments were allowed to escalate.

“If I don’t walk away, the next move… it’s going to be a bloodbath, like it was on the island,” Depp says on the recording.

Johnny Depp Trial
At Johnny Depp’s libel trial, jurors listen to tense audio recordings.

In other audio clips, Depp yells vulgarities at his wife, calling her a derogatory name and yelling at her, “You stupid f—-.”

As the clips were played, Depp winced on the stand, while Heard appeared to fight back tears. Depp is suing Heard for libel in connection with an op-ed piece she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. She describes herself as a “public figure advocating for domestic abuse.”

The clips were part of Depp’s grueling cross-examination, which concluded late Monday morning as he took the stand for a fourth day of testimony over his allegations that Heard falsely portrayed him as a domestic abuser.

During cross-examination, Heard’s lawyers continued their barrage of questions, focusing on Depp’s drinking, drug use, and charged interactions with Heard during their relationship.

Questions about audio clips and text messages
Depp actually said very little during his testimony on Monday, though on redirect he did try to explain some of his coarse language and denied again that he cut off his own finger during a fight with Heard, despite telling people he did at the time. He now claims that Heard threw a vodka bottle at him, which severed his finger.

“Why would I start lopping off digits in my 50s?” he asked, showing the jury his right hand.
“I can’t accept responsibility for what I’ve dubbed Little Richard, my severed finger.”

The majority of the questioning involved Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rottenborn, playing audio clips or reading vulgar text messages sent by Depp and asking Depp if he’d read them correctly.

Depp expressed his displeasure with Rottenborn’s questions throughout the cross-examination. When Rottenborn interrupted one of Depp’s responses, he stated, “I was talking.” When Rottenborn stated that the question had been fully answered, Depp replied, “as long as you’re happy.”

Depp also expressed his displeasure as Rottenborn read headlines from a series of negative articles written about him, some of which date back to 2014.

“All of these are hit pieces. These are scum “Depp stated.

Rottenborn introduced the articles in an attempt to demonstrate that the 2018 Post article at the center of the case, rather than a long history of bad behavior, was what harmed his reputation.

The trial has focused on the unpleasant details of a brief marriage.

While the libel suit is supposed to be about whether Depp was defamed in the article, the majority of the trial has been about the couple’s brief marriage. Depp denies ever striking Heard, while Heard’s attorneys argue that Depp sexually and physically abused her and that his denials are invalid because he was frequently drunk and high to the point of blacking out.

Depp was last seen in court on Thursday. Heard’s attorneys cited his history of trashing hotel rooms, as well as an incident in which he smashed a bathroom sconce during an argument with Heard. Depp is also the subject of a lawsuit filed by a member of a film crew who claims Depp assaulted them in 2018.

The jury has seen dozens of Depp’s text messages to friends about his drinking, drug use, and interactions with his then-wife, as well as his letters of apology to Heard and her father.

Depp claimed that the accusations and the Post article harmed his reputation, making him a Hollywood outcast and costing him a role in the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. According to Heard’s attorneys, Depp’s tarnished reputation is the result of his own bad behavior.

Since Tuesday afternoon, Depp has been on the stand in Fairfax County Circuit Court. Heard abused drugs, according to the actor, and she was the one who physically assaulted him. He called the drug addiction allegations against him “grossly embellished,” despite admitting to using a variety of drugs.
