Job Summary:
High volume dermatopathology laboratory in need of an experienced HTL-HT for immediate hire. Preferred knowledge for the following but not limited to:
· Accessioning, processing and embedding of tissue.
· Producing slides via microtomy.
· Gross examination of tissue (high complexity testing) set forth by the 1988 CLIA CFR 493. 1489.
· Perform routine H&E staining and special stains including but not limited to: Periodic Acid Schiff's (PAS), Gram, Collodial Iron, and Acid Fast Bacillus (AFB).
· Perform IHC testing.
· Monday-Friday Schedule, preferred 8:00am - 4:30pm shift.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
· Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
· Embed processed tissue in paraffin and ensure proper tissue processing.
· To prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin & Eosin, Periodic Acid Schiff’s, and other special stains.
· Prepare solutions and reagents and perform IHC procedures.
· To prepare slides for Quality Control.
· Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue specimens.
· To receive, and log specimens as per policy in manual/LIS.
· To perform gross examination (high complexity testing) of specimens if authorized per CAP regulations.
· To diligently follow all lab procedures in the preparation of tissue samples for pathological testing.
· To be aware of and strictly comply with all OSHA (safety) and CAP/CLIA (lab certification and registration) and HIPAA (patient confidentiality) regulations in the performance of all aspects of the position.
· To efficiently organize, file and be able to locate all slides/blocks, containers and log reports and dispose them as necessary per CAP regulations.
· Ensure all lab logs and manuals are kept up to date including but not limited to: Accessioning log/LIS, temperature log, procedure manual, SDS sheets, etc.
· To appropriately maintain all solutions and stains used in the pathological testing process according to manufacturer's recommendations.
· To operate, clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments, ensuring a clean work area at all times.
· To continually update the laboratory manuals by staying abreast of new product/chemical and other new laboratory information and ensuring all updates are made in the manual and communicated appropriately.
· To perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
· Requires Associate Degree or greater in chemical, physical, biological science, or medical laboratory technology. Requirements can also be met with the following education AND training: – Education - 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination) – Training – either completion of an approved/accredited clinical laboratory training program, which may be included in the 60 semester hours specified above or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing
· Requires knowledge of medical terminology and standard diagnostic laboratory protocols.
· Requires ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
· Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
· Requires ability to stand for extended periods of time to access and operate diagnostic equipment.
· Requires ability to maintain confidentiality in strict adherence to HIPAA patient confidentiality regulations.
