Title IX & EEO Investigator Location Alabama : Job no: 500318 Department: Title IX Office Work type: staff full-time exempt Location: Alabama Categories: People Resources & Culture Purpose of the Position: Under limited direction of the Director of the Office Title IX & Equal Opportunity, the IX & EEO Investigator is responsible for conducting prompt and complete investigations consistent with standard investigative practices for reported discriminatory conduct based on protected status, including sexual misconduct, as assigned. The Investigator will have primary responsibility for implementation of all Title IX rights associated with pregnancy for students and employees and will serve as a collaborator to the mission and vision of the Office of Title IX & Equal Opportunity. Duties/Responsibilities
  • Investigates allegations of harassment, discrimination, sexual misconduct, and retaliation based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, and any other basis protected by law from inception to findings. This includes creating an investigative plan, conducting and memorializing witness interviews, making credibility assessments, evaluating evidence, summarizing findings, and making appropriate and necessary recommendations.
  • Collects sensitive and confidential information and documentation from appropriate sources.
  • Retains and stores investigative communications, notes, reports, documents, images, recordings, and other evidentiary records for all reports, complaints, inquiries, assessments, and investigations.
  • Prepares concise detailed written investigative summaries and reports that accurately reflects findings of fact, processing, evidentiary review, and conclusions.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with Dean of Students, UAH Police, Residence Life, Provosts Office, Athletics, Registrar, Human Resources, Counseling Center, Financial Aid, individual colleges, and other campus and community partners.
  • Provides timely reports and updates regarding the status of IX & EEO reports, assigned complaints, and investigations in process to the Director.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in all subject areas related to sex and other protected statuses covered by Civil Rights and discrimination laws, including investigations, nondiscrimination, harassment, and retaliation laws, policies, best practices, strategies, resources, initiatives, and compliance.
  • Conducts intake interview with applicants, students, faculty, and staff who are pregnant, who experience childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, and recovery therefrom, pregnancy-related conditions, and who are new parents through adoption, fostering, step and legal guardianship; work with the individual to identify reasonable and appropriate modifications to ensure access to employment and educational programs while providing direct services to individuals including training in self advocacy, advising, and strategy development.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources, faculty, Parking, and other campus partners to identify and implement reasonable and appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Creates, manages, and maintains accurate records of applicants, students, faculty, and staff receiving pregnancy and pregnancy-related modifications; ensures receipt of documentation to substantiate eligibility for modifications.
  • Maintains accurate list of lactation rooms and manages condition and content.
  • Acts as a resource for campus partners on issues related to the provision of pregnancy modifications; educate campus partners on compliance with federal and state regulations through direct contact and training as needed.
  • Assists with the development, implementation, delivery, and management of comprehensive training programs for students, faculty and staff related to relevant federal and state laws and UAH Antidiscrimination Policies prohibiting harassment, discrimination, hazing, and retaliation.
  • Engages with the Director to identify and address any systemic patterns, deviations, and irregularities that suggest or substantiate discriminatory conduct or results.
  • Assists with the preparation and maintenance of statistical, demographic, and subject matter data related to discrimination complaints, reports and trends. This includes being responsible for keeping thorough, accurate, and comprehensive records related to all assigned complaints and investigations.
  • Maintains privacy and ensures compliance with FERPA and other state, federal, and institutional student record policies.
  • Assists in administrative duties of the Office of Title IX & Equal Opportunity including but not limited to, filing, requisitions, budget review, purchasing, etc.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Three to five years of full-time verifiable relevant work experience, some of which involve conducting investigations
  • Knowledge of Title IX, Title VII, Title VI, ADA, Section 504, and federal civil rights laws, including case law and agency interpretation
  • Experience conducting complex legal analysis, reaching legally sound determinations, and producing high-quality concise logical written work products
  • Familiarity with witness interview, credibility evaluation, and investigation techniques
  • Must be able to take initiative and independently organize, prioritize, and carry out detailed work under time constraints
  • Ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information in an ethical impartial manner
  • Ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
Desired Qualifications:
  • J.D. or another advanced degree in criminal justice, social work, etc. is preferred
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion and good judgment and quickly establish credibility with a broad range of constituents is desired
  • Experience conducting sensitive and confidential discrimination and/or employment investigations in a university or corporate setting is preferred
  • Experience investigating cases of sexual and interpersonal violence is strongly preferred
  • Experience with alternative dispute resolution practices is preferred
  • Experience interpreting federal, state and local equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws and regulations including Title IX Title VII, Title VI, FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Action, Violence Against Women Act, and other applicable laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination, harassment, or retaliation is strongly preferred
