Manual Firmware update on your Netgear Router using the router web interface

  1. Open any of the web browsers available on your computer or mobile device that is associated with your router’s network.
    Note: Use Ethernet cable to connect your device or computer system to your router while updating the firmware.
  2. In the address bar, Enter or

    Note: The default username is the admin and the password is the one that you have determined when the first login was made by you.
    The LOGIN username and password are case-sensitive.

  4. From the Dashboard, select ADVANCED > Administration.
  5. Click Firmware Update or Router Update.
  6. Now, click on the CHECK option. It starts looking for new firmware update available:  if any, available it will display a message for your confirmation whether you want to download and install it or not.
  7. Click Yes.
    Note: The router begins downloading and will update your router.
    Don’t refresh your browser window unless it will interrupt the download process or may corrupt the firmware update.
  8. Once the download is completed, your router will restart. This process usually takes up to 3-5 minutes.

Manually download the firmware and update your device using software interface

  1. Launch a web browser and visit
  2. In the search box, type your router’s Model number.
  3. Now, From the Drop-down list find your specified model number.
    Note:If you are unable to see drop-down menu, make sure you have entered your model number properly, or select a product category to browse for your product model.
  4. Click Firmware and Software Downloads.
  5. Under Current Versions, select the firmware versions that you need to download and afterwards tap the Download button.
  6. Unzip the downloaded document and run the .exe file.
  7. Follow the onscreen follow-ups to update the firmware on your device.

Some products of the Netgear checks for the new firmware updates regularly and if the download is available it automatically updates your router software. If an automatic firmware update feature is not available on your device, you may update it manually. Netgear Router update using the Netgear Genie software

  1. Launch Netgear genie software on your desktop and click Router Settings.
  2. Router LOGIN page displays, Enter username and password for your router.

  3. After Login, it will redirect you to the Wireless Settings of your router. Click the right arrow on the upper-right corner of the dashboard until it displays Router Update tab.
  4. Now, Click Router Update > Next to check for firmware availability.
    note: If a firmware update is available it will notify you with the information message, i.e., “A new firmware upgrade is available. Click here to get it.”.
    If there is NO firmware update available for your router, it will show the message stating that you have the latest firmware.
  5. If available click OK to begin with the download process. The desktop genie app updates the firmware.
    Note: Don’t interrupt the downloading process by closing the software or by disconnecting the router.
  6. Once the download is completed, it will proceed with uploading the firmware.
  7. When a router is done with uploading, it will Reboot.
  8. After the rebooting process, you may check if the firmware version loaded on your router on the top-right corner of the page is now updated or not.
  9. No new Firmware Update message should be visible there.
